The Humboldt-Universität offers one of the widest ranges of opportunities for students to study abroad. We recognized how important it is for our graduates to be able to live and work in an increasingly global environment. Why go abroad?
There are many reasons to study abroad. Besides improving your language skills and getting to know another culture studying abroad means discovering a whole new system of higher education. You will collect valuable experiences that contribute to your personal development.Students in Higher Education may spend a study period in another country within the framework of agreed arrangements between the universities. The accreditation of examinations can be ensured before departure. Thus the credits archived abroad will be taken into account to your studies at the Humboldt.
Where to go?
We have an impressive range of international partners, including some of the leading universities around the world. European exchanges that are organized through the International Office are available through the ERASMUS scheme. The Erasmus scheme is a European-wide exchange program for students in Higher Education. Worldwide university exchanges such as those in America or China are organized either by the Abteilung Internationales or you choose one of the Schools partner institutions.

Previous outgoing exchange students have the best information about what a semester abroad is really like. Many students also have an email address listed- don’t be afraid to ask them your questions!

When to go?
The optimal moment for the stay abroad should be based on your individual study plan. As an orientation, Bachelor students can use the "International Study Plan for Bachelor students" (only old study regulations).
Take into consideration, that the beginnings of the terms vary from country to country: the fall term often starts in August or September and ends in January. If you plan carefully before you leave you can save some time by integrating an internship into your curriculum (this his can be financially supported by LEONARDO).
Other options are the International Summer School of Economics and Management in Cuba (ISSEM) or a wide range of Summer Schools offered by our partners.
How to apply?
For Humboldt students interested in studying abroad, we offer two exchange programmes at departmental level:
- The ERASMUS Exchange Program for study within Europe
- The International Exchange Program for study beyond Europe

Furthermore, there are more university-wide exchange programs where students of the School of Business and Economics can participate:
- Bilateral university agreements (both within and outside of Europe): the International Exchange Program of the "Abteilung Internationales".
- The International Summer School in Economics and Management (ISSEM) in La Habanna, Cuba: www.issem.de
- Summer Schools: if you want to study abroad for a shorter amount of time at a foreign university, there is the possibility to participate in summer school. The courses usually run about two-four weeks and academic recognition of the courses you take is generally possible!
Where to get financial help?
Studying abroad is also linked to new expenses. However, there are many institutions that provide scholarships and other financial support. In most cases, it is worth applying and we have compiled a short selection for you to look through. Please note that most scholarships depend on which host university you have been accepted to. Because of this, an application for financial support can only be submitted after you have been accepted by your chosen host university. However, we recommend that you take care of this as soon as possible after receiving your letter of acceptance as some scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
