Russia
Income from vast natural resources, above all oil and gas, have helped Russia overcome the economic collapse of 1998. The state-run gas monopoly Gazprom is the world's largest producer and exporter, and supplies a growing share of Europe's needs. Economic strength has allowed Vladimir Putin to enhance state control over political institutions and the media, buoyed by extensive public support for his policies as prime minister, president and now prime minister again. Spanning nine time zones, Russia is the largest country on earth in terms of surface area, although large tracts in the north and east are inhospitable and sparsely populated.

Studying in Russia (in general)
Climate
Moscow, like most of Russia, has a continental climate with dramatic swings in temperature from season to season. In summer you can enjoy a beer in an open air cafe, rollerblading in the parks or taking a cruise down the Moscow river with friends. July and August are the hottest months of the year. Those staying in the city can escape to nearby reservoirs and "beach resorts" for a few hours of relaxation and fresh country air at the weekends.
The weather begins to get cooler in September and the city comes back to life again. Autumn quickly passes into winter, and the first real cold hits sometime in October - there's usually snow on the ground from November through to April. Even during the coldest months of December to February, there is still so much to do whether it's skating or skiing, going to the banya with a bunch of friends, or seeing one of the many ballets or musicals on offer. If you're prepared for the cold, many people say Moscow is at its most beautiful under a blanket of snow.
By March, the temperatures begin to rise and the Russians celebrates 'Malsenitsa', one of the oldest national festivals where they traditionally feast on blinis (Russian pancakes) and burn the "scarecrow of winter" to mark beginning of Spring.

Public Holidays
Russians love to celebrate and national holidays are a serious event! For the most important ones, such as New Year, Christmas, and the May holidays, the country literally shuts down - many shops close their doors, the streets are adorned with flags, and main roads are closed off for parades. Everyone gets the day off work, and if the holiday falls on a weekend, the Friday or Monday becomes a day off.
| January 1-5 | New Year |
| January 7 | Christmas Day (Orthodox Calendar) |
| February 23 | Defenders of the Fatherland Day |
| March 8 | International Women's Day |
| May 1 | Labor Day |
| May 9 | Victory Day |
| June 12 | Russia Day |
| November 4 | Day of Accord and Reconciliation |
Language
Although the English language is taught in schools and some people speak it quite fluently, you will find on the streets that most Russians don't speak any English at all. If you make the effort to learn the Cyrillic alphabet and a few basic phrases, you'll be able to find your way around, ask for things in shops and negotiate taxi fares! Beyond that, any Russian you learn is a great plus and will certainly add to your enjoyment of living in Moscow.

Moscow lies in the centre of what is known as European Russia and with over 10 million inhabitants, it's an impressive place. This is a city of contrasts - ancient monasteries and ultra-modern skyscrapers stand side by side, neon-lit ads share the skyline with monumental Stalin buildings.
