Application for ERASMUS at the School of Business and Economics
We are glad that you are considering the Humboldt-Universität for your studies abroad!! This page gives some information about the application, enrollment and all the administrative steps you need to do before your ERASMUS experience can start. Read this information carefully - it will help make your stay at Humboldt a success!!
Eligibility of students for ERASMUS studies at Humboldt-Universität is based on a partnership created between the student's home university and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Please note that all students striving for an exchange semester at the Humboldt-Universität must apply through their home university. If an exchange agreement does not exist between your university and the Humboldt-Universität, you are not eligible for admission as an exchange student. Furtehrmore, we do not accept any student without an official nomination of their domestic supervisor. Please contact the international relations office of your university for more information.
Normally, students on exchange programs stay at Humboldt-Universität for one or two semesters without the option of obtaining a Humboldt degree. Once you have been nominated by your domestic supervisor we will get in touch with you to provide detailed information about the online application procedure. Please meet the deadline for the registration; otherwise you cannot be enrolled to study at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin!
Remember to bring a certificate with you proving that you have a health insurance, or at least the E111 form and to have your card of identity or your passport with you! Please note that the cost of living in Berlin should amount to around €600-650 per month!
Language Requirements
... for Bachelor students
It is absolutely vital for Bachelor students to have a good command of the German language if studies at Humboldt are to be successful. Most of the courses for the Bachelor students are taught in German!
We will ask the students to take an online language test in German during the application procedure. The minimum score is set at 35 points!! Students who scored 35-50 points (out of 100) will be required to take an intensive German language course before the term starts (e.g. Intensive Language course at the HU, see: www.international.hu-berlin.de/sprachen/deutsch/intensivkurs).
If students do not acheive at least ≥ 51 points afterwards, there is no opportunity to be enrolled at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
... for Master students
Master students need to be comfortable in English at a C1 level (according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) or higher. Please note that about 90 per cent of the Master courses are taught in English!
To provide evidence of language skills students should send a certificate (see list below) to incomings-wiwi@hu-berlin.de. Alternatively, the home coordinator can confirm that the student is able to follow lectures in English.

Problems? Questions?
For all problems and questions concerning the online application system or the general application process, please contact the ERASMUS Incoming Team:
Enrollment
After the forms have been processed (letters MUST be signed to be valid!), nominees will receive an e-mail, including confirmation of admission, further information about the enrollment process and a binding appointment with the enrollment office. All international exchange students get their matriculation form from the International Office (Abteilung Internationales) of the HU. Please note: Enrollment after the deadline is NOT possible. Please note that it is absolutely necessary for you to be present at Humboldt on your personal matriculation date!
The following documentation is required for enrollment (more detailed information on the individual items is given in the online application procedure):
Proof of registration at the Local Registration Office (Bürgeramt):
Registration should be completed as soon as possible after you have found an apartment/room or have moved into a student dormitory in Berlin. For a successful registration, the following steps are necessary:
Please let your landlord sign the form. If it is not possible, you can present your lease. If you live in a dormitory, its administration will sign the form.
Students from an EU country as well as from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland do not need a visa or a residence permit. As part of the registration process, anyone in this category will receive a free of charge freedom of movement certificate (Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung). The only requirements are that the student has sufficient financial resources and appropriate medical insurance coverage. You can apply for the Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung when registering at your Local Registration Office. All you need is a valid ID. Swiss citizens may obtain this certificate from the Foreigners’ Registration Office (via our Visa Service, please see www.international.hu-berlin.de/an_die_hu-en/studierende/orbis/visaservice).
Also an advantage, since Berlin is a nice city, they give Begrüßungsgeld(100 EUR) to every new Berliner. To receive this money, you should take this document to the local registration office: Antrag auf Gewährung von Begrüßungsgeld. After the matriculation, take this sealed paper to the university's cashier (Unter den Linden 6, room 1004/1006) and get the money.
Proof of health insurance cover
In order to get enrolled, you need to show proof of your current health insurance cover. During the matriculation period representatives of health insurance companies (AOK, TK) will answer your questions, and if necessary, arrange a corresponding health insurance. Students coming from countries that have a social security agreement with Germany, take the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with them. The EHIC is accepted in Germany. See International Students Guide for more information.
Valid Passport and (in case you need it) a valid student visa
EU citizens, citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Japan and Switzerland, Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, Korea, New Zealand and the USA are exempted from the visa requirement. Please contact the Humboldt's visa service in case of any problems: http://international.hu-berlin.de/an_die_hu-en/studierende/orbis/visaservice.
Proof of payment of the standard dues and fees
Please note: the fees are subject to changes. Please stick to the sums you'll receive via email!
Students studying at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in programs (ERASMUS, university agreements, DAAD scholarships, Fulbright scholarships) are exempt from the matriculation fee. Nevertheless, there are some things that have to be paid in order to get enrolled:
Semester payment for the Studierendenschaft: All HU students are automatically members of the student body (Studierendenschaft); a semester payment is compulsory. In return, students have the right to elect the student parliament in January and to take advantage of counseling services for any kind of problems.
Semester payment for the Studentenwerk: All students are required to pay a semester due for the Studentenwerk, a student welfare organization which operates student dining halls and cafeterias at the university as well as the residential halls (Wohnheime). In addition, it runs a number of counseling services.
Semester Ticket: The semester ticket is a student season ticket for public transport in Berlin. Every Humboldt student is required to purchase this ticket. The ticket allows you to travel by U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, trams and ferries in the Berlin area and Potsdam and it includes taking your bike along.Compare: a regular monthly ticket costs 72 EUR (see www.bvg.de).
The total amount of around 250 EUR is to be paid either into the Humboldt account (which will be given to you during the application process) or it can be paid in cash or by card at the Cashier’s Office of the University during the enrollment period. Please ask for a pink formula. It is also possible to pay the fees before the enrollment period.
If you are a Master student:
bring your Bachelors diploma or equivalent certificates!
After registering you will receive a temporary certificate of matriculation that is valid as a temporary student identity card for 4 weeks. It can take up to three weeks before your permanent student ID card is sent to you via post along with the semester ticket. It is only with this permanent student ID card that you can set up an Email account at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
For students planning to stay for the whole academic year: Please note that you have to re-register for the following semester if you plan to study at the Humboldt-Universität for two semesters. You do not have to take all the above steps again, you just need to pay the registration fee again. The deadline for your re-registration and the paying details are stated on your student’s pass (the "green letter" you'll receive by the beginning of the winter term).
Extension of stay
ERASMUS students enrolled for the Winter Semester at Humboldt-Universität may prolong their stay for the Summer Semester.
Acceptance cannot be guaranteed and depends, first, on if there are still places available in the bilateral agreements with the home universities, and then as well on our capacity constraints. If you are considering to apply for one further semester, please fill out the Verlängerungsantrag für Studierende and return it to the International Office no later than 15th of December. The home coordinator must also send us an e-mail stating that from their side it is fine.
If your prolongiation is succesfull, please do not forget to pay the Rückmeldegebühr untill the 15th of February at the latest (deadline of regular period), or by 28 February at the latest incurring an additional charge of 20 Euros (deadline for late submissions).
ERASMUS students enrolled for the Summer Semester at Humboldt-Universität cannot prolong their stay within the framework of ERASMUS for another semester.
Exceptions: Bachelor and Master students writing their final thesis and those who for academic reasons could not conclude the project they carry out at Humboldt within one semester are exempted from the general regulation. They are requested to personally explain the reasons for the necessary prolongation to the University ERASMUS Co-Ordinator, Dr. Dietmar Buchmann, with supportive reports by the ERASMUS Co-Ordinator of the faculty and the staff member who tutors the project having to be presented.
PhD students can prolong their studies for a maximum of one year, whether they started their studies at Humboldt in the Winter Semester or in the Summer Semester. But they are also required to file an application (Verlängerungsantrag für Promovierende) by 15 February (deadline of regular period) for the subsequent Summer Semester or by 15 July for the subsequent Winter Semester (deadlines of late submissions incurring an additional charge of 20 Euros are 28 February and 31 July).
