Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin - School of Business and Economics

Welcome Address

In 2006/07, the Institute of Informa- tion Systems was able to continue and grow its successful activities. With regard to research, the Institute was able to keep its leading position in the acquisition of external funding. Since 2003, the Institute has acted as coor- dinator for the Berlin Research Center on Internet Eco- nomics, “InterVal” (“Internet and Value Chains”). Since its inception, the German Ministry of Research and Education has funded the center with more than 4 million Euro. Since 2006, the German Ministry for Labor and Economics has been funding “Ko-RFID”, a project on collaboration issues in RFID-based value chains. Also in 2006, the institute coordinated a highly visible study for the Ministry of Research on the perception and social consequences of ubiquitous computing technologies (“TAUCIS”).

Ubiquitous computing has been a major focus of the institute’s work not only since 2005, when it started an Interdisciplinary Center on the subject. The center brings together Humboldt faculty from a broad variety of disciplines including computer science, business ad- ministration, economics, psychology, library sciences, geography, and law. The center’s objective is the integrated study of ubiquitous computing technologies – their design, their implementation, but also their impact on our economies and on society as a whole. An inter- disciplinary approach is essential in this context.

With regard to teaching, the Institute has been instrumental in establishing a new master program in information systems, which is conducted jointly with Humboldt’s computer science department. The program regularly receives a large number of applications, and our recent graduates have fared very well on the job market.

The achievements of the past years would not have been possible without the support of partners in Germany and abroad, in academia, industry, and public administration. In particular, we would like to thank our public sponsors: the German Ministry of Research and Education, the German Ministry of Economics and Technology, and the German Research Foundation. Special thanks also goes to our industrial partners: SAP, Daimler, GERRY WEBER, Wellmann, Behr, PSI, IBM and Oracle are just a few of the companies with whom we have been working closely and whose support we greatly appreciate.
