The Finance Group offers a broad spectrum of finance courses at the Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. level. In addition, several other Lehrstühle offeer finance related courses. The entire finance curriculum at Humboldt is shown below. Bachelor courses are usually offered in German, while Master and Ph.D. courses are always taught in English.

VL: Investition und Finanzierung (2 SWS, 3 SP) 

Dieser Kurs wird im Wechsel mit Prof. Müller angeboten. Themen: Wertpapiere und Finanzmärkte, Zinsraten, Present Value, Bewertung festverzinslicher Wertpapiere, Aktienbewertung und Investitionsrechnung

VL: Investmentanalyse und Portfoliomanagement (2 SWS, 3 SP) 

Dieser Kurs behandelt Themen wie Risiko & Rendite, Portfoliowahl, Capital Asset Pricing Model, Index-Modelle, Efficient Market Hypothesis, Festverzinsliche Wertpapiere und eine Einführung in die Bewertung derivativer Wertpapiere.

IL: Corporate Finance (4 SWS, 6 SP)  

This course replaces Introduction to Finance I & II. It focuses on cash management & financial forecasting, company/project valuation using DCF models and the basics of capital structure and dividend policies. The Modigliani-Miller Theorem is a central focus of this last section.

Prerequisite: Completion of the BWL III Module

VL + ÜB: Bewertung Derivativer Wertpapiere (4 SWS, 6 SP) 

This course discusses forwards and futures, option pricing in the binomial model and the Black Scholes model, estimation of risk-neutral densities, and applications.

VL + ÜB: Asset Management (4 SWS, 6 SP)  

This course discusses portfolio theory, the Capital Asset Pricing Model, Arbitrage Pricing Theory and Stock Valuation.

VL + ÜB: Advanced Corporate Finance I (4 SWS, 6 SP)  

This course discusses major financial decisions and policies of non-financial firms, such as optimal capital structure, fund raising, payout policy, corporate governance, and executive compensation from the perspective of principal-agent conflicts and information asymmetries.

VL: Advanced Corporate Finance II (2 SWS, 3 SP)  

This course covers advanced issues in corporate finance, such as mergers & acquisitions, risk management and how financial engineering can benefit a non-financial firm.

Prerequisite: Advanced Corporate Finance I

VL + ÜB: Financial Engineering (4 SWS, 6 SP)  

This course introduces students to one of the most important and technically challenging areas in finance: derivative securities. The securities we cover include futures and forward contracts, options, swaps and exotic derivatives. We will examine the uses as well as the pricing of derivatives. Particular emphasis will be given to the Black-Scholes model and the binomial option-pricing model.

Seminar: Real Effects of Finance (4 SWS, 6 SP)  

This course discusses the real effects of financial market development(s) on non-financial markets such as product and labor markets.

Case Seminar Corporate Finance (3 SWS, 6 SP) 

This seminar discusses case studies that relate to the materials covered in Corporate Finance and Advanced Corporate Finance I. It is recommended to enrol in this seminar while taking Advanced Corporate Finance I.

Prerequisite: Students must take ACFI parallel to the case seminar.

Evaluation: Presentation (20%), four case reports (80%)

Hauptseminar Corporate Finance (2 SWS, 6 SP) 

The purpose of this seminar is to introduce students to major empirical research topics and methods in corporate finance, in order to prepare them for writing a Diplom or Master thesis at the Institute of Corporate Finance. In the first part of the seminar we will review some of the main econometric techniques such as regression analysis, time series models, panel data estimation, and event studies. You will also learn how to analyze this data with STATA®, a simple but powerful statistical software package. The second part of the seminar consists of student presentations of important research papers in corporate finance. In addition, students are required to replicate an empirical research paper with new data.

Hauptseminar Financial Economics (2 SWS, 6 SP) 

The purpose of this seminar is to introduce students to major empirical research topics and methods in financial economics, in order to prepare them for writing a Diplom or Master thesis at the Institute of Financial Economics. This seminar is organized as a reading group in which several scientific papers in the field of financial economics are discussed.

Evaluation: Class participation (100%)

Advanced Financial Economics II (2 SWS, 6 SP)  

The seminar discusses papers on asset pricing and market microstructure at an introductory PhD level.

Advanced Financial Economics III (2 SWS, 6 SP) 

The seminar discusses papers on corporate finance at an introductory PhD level.

VL: Financial Markets Regulation (PhD Course) (2 SWS, 6 SP) 

This course introduces students to the regulation of financial markets and the participants in these markets at the PhD level. Topics: Impact of financial disclosure requirements, on corporate policies, financial market frictions, economics of financial crises.

Evaluation: Written Exam (120 min.)

 

Finance - Accounting Research Seminar (2 SWS) 

This seminar is a series of research seminars given by leading researchers in the areas of finance and accounting.
