Social Events

Settling in...

Since roughly 80% of our student body comes from abroad, the "MEMS Family" is one of the most important anchors we offer our students. Between the three week, all-encompassing integration program we organize prior to each winter semester and the continuing social activities throughout the year, you are sure to feel like a welcome member of the MEMS family. As course work can be quite intense, we even supply a Social Activities Tutor to make sure you have ample opportunities to unwind with your fellow classmates. Assimilation into university life is an important first step towards succeeding in the program and every effort is made to ensure an easy integration into the school, the university, and the city. Besides being available to students almost every day of the week for questions concerning just about anything, the MEMS team also supplies its students with a variety of social events.

Activities by Category

The MEMS program prides itself not only on academic excellence but also on producing well-rounded graduates. One of the main ways we help you achieve this is by providing a good study/social life. Berlin is one of the most exciting cities in the world and will no doubt have something to offer everyone who comes.

Integration Weeks

On arrival, there is a three week integration period that helps you through all the tricks of the German administrative process, but more importantly helps you discover the city that everyone inevitably calls “home”.

Presentations

During the first weeks of your integration period, the MEMS Team and other university 'experts' offer new students presentations to explain all the different aspects of starting your time as a student of the MEMS program at Humboldt-Universität.

Presentations are given on everything from course selection, to health insurance, visa assistance, German language courses, career perspectives, and internship opportunities. This is also a great way to see your new classmates and get to know your cohort's distribution.

Math and Econometrics Prep Courses

The MEMS program is a quantitatively oriented program that relies on advanced mathematical ability to elaborate on complex modeling techniques. Since our students come from many different backgrounds (anything from Economics to Engineering or Law Studies), we offer crash courses in econometrics and math to ensure everyone starts on an even footing.

Campus and City Tour

Getting to know your surroundings is a crucial step in finding your place in any new setting. We give you two separate tours-- one of the university campus and one of the city at large. During the campus tour we show you how to access the library, which cafeteria offers the largest selection of edible delicacies, and where you need to register for student status.

The School of Business and Economics is located right in the historical center of Berlin and we use the integration weeks to offer students an in-depth introduction to the cultural significance and historical relevance of your new surroundings.

Godparent Meeting

Before beginning your first semester in the MEMS program, we match every new student with a second year student to perpetuate our MEMS godparenting program. Godparents can offer advice on course or apartment selection and offer an unbiased opinion of the program and of the city. We try to match students with similar backgrounds so they can offer new students relevant answers or insight into their new life in Berlin.

During the first weeks of integration, we organize a meeting with the first and second year students. This way any godparents who have yet to meet their godchildren will get a chance to meet each other before the first day of classes.

Going-out-Together

Getting to know Berlin is not just about its historical past, but also about its very vibrant night life. During your first few weeks, we will organize several events for you to get to know the other side of city life, to get to know your new classmates better, and to just let loose before the semester stress begins. We will set up some get-togethers at bars and get you all on the guest list for a night of dancing and fun at one of Berlin's coolest clubs.

Welcome Party

During the integration weeks, we also host the official MEMS Welcome Party inside our faculty building. At this catered affair, you will be welcomed by the Dean and your Program Director. This also serves as a great opportunity to mingle with some of our most renowned professors in a relaxed setting outside of class.

Integration Weekend in Potsdam

The final excursion during the integration program is the one that most people really never forget. A weekend trip away in historic Potsdam will further your integration and form bonds that will last throughout your entire time as a MEMS student. You will have a city tour by bike or foot, including a visit to the world’s UNESCO Heritage site, Sanssouci. To culminate the weekend and the integration weeks, we celebrate with one final party before the semester begins.

Stammtisch

Stammtisch Every month, the MEMS students gather at a local bar to unwind from the normal stresses of graduate school and catch up with friends and colleagues. The Stammtisch (a traditional get-together of friends on a weekly or monthly basis at a German beer hall) is a regular fixture of MEMS social life with the occasional visit from some of your professors. Don’t worry, they’ll be the first to prost you with a beer.

MEMS Euro Trip

Euro Trip Berlin has a lot to offer culturally, historically, and socially, but we also like to broaden our horizons and venture to other parts of Europe. Each spring, the MEMS students choose a city to visit for a weekend, where we learn about the culture, indulge in the local food, and of course, experience the nightlife. Previous trips include Rome, Barcelona, and Prague, with the 2012 odyssey going to Budapest.

International Buffet

International Buffet With such a diverse student body representing over 15 countries, the annual International Buffet allows the students to cook or bake traditional food from their home countries and share with their friends. Don’t like to cook? We always need beverages! We conclude the dinner with some entertaining games and then head to a local bar or club to dance off the calories.

Dragon Boat Race

Dragon Boat Race While our annual finishing place for this summer ritual can range from second to dead last, the MEMS team always ranks first in entertainment. So get out your boat shoes, polish off your sunglasses, zinc up your nose, and get ready to paddle the MEMS dragon boat to victory with your classmates.

Karaoke

Karaoke Give someone a microphone and there’s no telling what they’ll do; this includes our MEMS students and the females of the International Office. The last karaoke night included a cash purse of 40€ for the best performance, but really the performances were all priceless.

Misc Events

Oktoberfest Our student body is diverse and thus, so are the activities. Ranging from trips to Oktoberfest, the theater, classical concerts, a night at the museum, mini-golf, soccer, or bowling tournaments, you’ll be sure to find something that interests you. Have an activity in mind? Tell the Social Activities Tutor and he/she will try to make it happen!
