Services

Humboldt Universität zu Berlin also offers nice services that can make your student life a bit easier or offer you new opportunities!

MEMS-HELPS: English Language Proofreading Service
Not confident with your English for an important paper?

Now you can utilize the MEMS - Humboldt English Language Proofreading Service (MEMS-HELPS) offered through the MEMS Career Services.

What are the steps?

1. When you have completed a paper (that is at least 10+ pages), email the paper and the day you need the paper completed to:

mems-careers (at) wiwi.hu-berlin.de.

2. We will contact the list of proofreaders from the program within 24-hours (all of whom have English as their native language); your assigned proofreader will contact you via email.

3. You and the proofreader must agree upon an amount per page or a flat fee for the entire job.

4. Relish in how great your edited work now reads!

S2S Pricing

As a general guide for pricing, we suggest 2€ per page, however, this amount may change based on the amount of work required. Again, you and your assigned proofreader must determine this; the MEMS office will only act as a liaison in the process and will not negotiate for you.

Timing

We cannot always guarantee that a proofreader will be available, especially if you do not allow sufficient time for the work to be completed (we suggest allowing at least a week for the proofreader to finish).

At the moment this service is only offered for seminar papers (10+ pages) and Master’s theses.

We hope you take advantage of this service so that you can be confident that your research is being presented in the best possible manner. Feel free to email us with any questions or concerns.

Working as a student in Berlin

Paid employment of students is subject to strict regulations because it must not impair studies. Whether and how long international students are permitted to be employed in Germany depends on the type of residence permit the individual student holds (see entry in passport).

Generally, international students are not allowed to be self-employed. This restriction does, however, not apply to students from 'old' EU member states.

Students from the 'old' EU countries, or from Liechtenstein, Norway and Iceland, on equal footing with German students, are allowed to take up student-type part-time or temporary jobs with no further restrictions. Yet studying must be the main emphasis. That is why they may work only for a maximum of 80 hours per month.

Students from the 'new' EU member states, which joined the community in May 2004, and all other international students are required to observe certain restrictions. They may work for a maximum of 90 'full' days (8 hours per day), or 180 'half' days (4 hours per day) in one year. Part-time employment of this kind does not require a work permit.

Internships for which payment is received are deemed to be student-type jobs and will be part of the 90 full or 180 half day total.

Student assistants (studentische Hilfskräfte) at university are considered to be of a special status. Since what they do in their jobs is closely linked to academic work the time restrictions mentioned above do not apply. Contracts allowing for paid work up to 80 hours per month can be concluded.

Students in student-type part-time employment are required to apply for an income tax card (Lohnsteuerkarte) to be obtained at the local Tax Office (Finanzamt).
