Welcome Weeks

International Office Logo

Each year International Office at the School of Business and Economics of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin offers Integration Weeks to the newly admitted students. The integration period helps you through all the tricks of the German administrative process, but more importantly helps you discover the city that everyone inevitably calls “home”.

In addition to that, we offer you the opportunity to recap vital quantitative skills which might have gone lost during a relaxing summer break. Last but not the least, this weeks will facilitate and speed up the process of getting used to the new environment by getting to know other fellow students and tackling challenges related to settling down in a new city together.

Integration activities usually last for three weeks and start on the last week of September. The last day of the introduction weeks is celebrated with an opening ceremony of the new academic year. Throughout these weeks students are offered to attend informative presentations, preparatory courses in mathematics and econometrics, as well as take part in various social events and activities.

Informative Presentations

During the first weeks of your integration period, the International Office Team and other university 'experts' offer new students presentations to explain all the different aspects of starting your time as a student of Humboldt-Universität.

Presentations are given on everything from course selection, to health insurance, visa assistance, German language courses, career perspectives, and internship opportunities. This is also a great way to see your new classmates and get to know your cohort's distribution.

Preparatory Courses in Mathematics and Econometrics

Preparatory courses in mathematics and econometrics are aimed at recapping the knowledge, which was obtained by the students during their undergraduate studies. It is also a great opporunity to obtain a necessary foundation for a successful start of the studies as a student of the School of Business and Economics of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in the case you are coming from a different academic background.

Campus and City Tour

Getting to know your surroundings is a crucial step in finding your place in any new setting. We give you two separate tours-- one of the university campus and one of the city at large. During the campus tour we show you how to access the library, which cafeteria offers the largest selection of edible delicacies, and where you need to register for student status.

The School of Business and Economics is located right in the historical center of Berlin and we use the integration weeks to offer students an in-depth introduction to the cultural significance and historical relevance of your new surroundings.

Getting to know Berlin is not just about its historical past, but also about its very vibrant night life. During your first few weeks, we will organize several events for you to get to know the other side of city life, to get to know your new classmates better, and to just let loose before the semester stress begins. We will set up some get-togethers at bars and get you all on the guest list for a night of dancing and fun at one of Berlin's coolest clubs.

Integration Weekend in Potsdam

The final excursion during the integration program is the one that most people really never forget. A weekend trip away in historic Potsdam will further your integration and form bonds that will last throughout your entire time as a Humboldt student. You will have a city tour by bike or foot, including a visit to the world’s UNESCO Heritage site, Sanssouci. To culminate the weekend and the integration weeks, we celebrate with one final party before the semester begins.

Social Activities and Events

Last but not the least, various social events and integrative activities help the students to make new friends by getting their fellow students better to know and getting used to the new environment without being exposed to it all on their own. Social activities include such events as campus and city tour, game night, scavenger hunt and an overnight trip to Potsdam. During the above mentioned tours students not only have an opportunity to learn the university, locations of various faculties and administrative buildings better, but also the city of Berlin itself. Whereas during the game night and the overnight trip to Potsdam students have the chance to get each other to know by playing different team games and spending a night in the cultural and historical capital of the federal state of Brandenburg – Potsdam.

Based on our experience and feedback from the former students, these events have a positive impact on the social integration and result in a seamless transition into the new academic life in the heart of Berlin.

Exchange students at our School have a separate program prepared solely for them. More information with regard to this program you will receive from your coordinator before your arrival to Berlin.
