Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Prerequisites for admission and admission to studies

Admission and admission to studies require that the applicant fulfils the admission requirements. This also includes the fact that the applicant has not definitively failed any prescribed certificates of achievement or examinations at a higher education institution within the area of application of the Higher Education Framework Act in accordance with the legal provisions of this higher education institution.

When is it possible or mandatory to apply for a higher semester?

The application for the higher semester in the Bachelor's or Master's programme is for German applicants or foreign students directly at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin online within the application deadlines possible.

There must be at least 30 credit points of creditable examination and study achievements per semester. The assessment of the achievement level is carried out according to the rules of the currently valid study and examination regulations of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

An application for the 1st semester in the same or substantially the same subject is excluded. In this case, an application for the higher semester must be submitted. This also applies if you have not yet completed any or insufficient examinations or studies. In this case, however, you must expect to be refused admission.

Who is to be graded in a higher semester and on what basis is this grading carried out?

The Examination Board will assign the student to a higher semester. The basis for this is the current transcript of records.

The grading is carried out according to § 15 ZSP-HU and the assessment of performance according to the rules of the currently study and examination regulations of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

The exams must be passed and the academic achievements must have been completed. The number of credit points awarded for the equivalent course at the Faculty of Business and Economics is taken into account for the compulsory or compulsory elective area. This may lead to a placement in a lower semester.

If examination registrations for the application semester are taken into account for grading purposes?
No. Only passed examinations and study achievements may be taken into account.

The Bachelor's programme has been completed and you are not yet enrolled in any Master's programme. If the application is for the first or higher semester?
No.  The application takes place exclusively for the 1st semester within the application deadlines of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

You are enrolled in a non-subject program, but have not yet completed any or insufficient examination or course work. Can I apply for a higher semester?
No. You apply again for the 1st semester. If you have completed your examination and study achievements by the time you matriculate, you can clarify the possibility of recognition at the Examination Office.

What happens after the grading?
All application documents will be forwarded to the Student Services Department, Admissions Office of Humboldt-Unviversität zu Berlin. From there you will receive a notification of admission or rejection of your application. No one can give you a forecast about whether you will be able to obtain a place at the university.

If the examination and study achievements have already been recognised when matriculation has taken place?
No.

The grading into a higher semester does not yet imply recognition of the achievements. Recognition only takes place after successful matriculation. After the beginning of the semester, register promptly at the Examination Office of the Faculty of Business and Economics and submit a current transcript of records containing all passed and failed examinations. If the course credits are not conclusive in terms of content, attach the relevant course descriptions.
