Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Business Administration


The Master of Science in Business Administration at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin aims to provide students with the business administration knowledge and skills they need for long-term success while working in an international, constantly changing economic environment.

We are firmly convinced that the following abilities are essential:

  • Generalist approach: As a prospective master’s student, you are faced with the decision of whether to specialise further in a single area or establish a broad foundation. The requirements of the profession are constantly developing. We therefore consider it unwise to specialise too narrowly within a constantly changing environment. Like many internationally renowned universities, we therefore offer a general Master’s in Business Administration degree.
  • Specialist knowledge: Nevertheless, detailed expertise is indispensable. Accordingly, you can specialise in  in-depth subjects as part of the course. 
  • Research skills: In recent years, Business Administration has developed into a discipline shaped by analytical and empirical activities. As someone who will shape the future of the economy and research, this is why quantitative methodological skills are vital for you. Only those able to understand and evaluate scientific findings will be able to put them to profitable use. For this reason, as well as matching the Humboldtian ideal, the research orientation of our teaching is also an essential tool for your future success in a sometimes radically changing environment.
  • Global orientation: Humboldt is an international ideal, the economy is an international business and Berlin is an international metropolis. For several years, the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration has offered an globally-oriented economics master’s course in the form of the ‘Master of Economics and Management Science’. We are one of the first German universities to do so. Our new Master’s of Business Administration degree also benefits from this experience. The majority of the teaching sessions are held in English. We have a large number of international students. Humboldt-Universität maintains contacts with partner universities worldwide, and also encourages and expects international student exchange programmes.
  • Social skills: Professional skills only lead to success when combined with social skills. Social behaviour cannot be learned from books, but is instead practised in day-to-day contact. Accordingly at Humboldt-Universität, we focus on knowledge transfer in seminars and smaller groups. We expect students to view each other as like-minded people within the group and work together towards success in their studies.
  • Initiative: Freedom in research and teaching also means freedom for students when it comes to choosing their fields of study. In this spirit, our master’s course offers students extensive flexibility. However, this freedom does require personal initiative. This is what we expect and encourage in all issues of academic life, and look forward to working together with you.

The goal we have set for our newly developed master’s course is to help our students to acquire and develop this knowledge and these skills to the best of our ability. The degree course is designed as a two-year programme and consists of 120 credit points (ECTS). You can be accepted for the doctoral programme while on the master’s course. The faculty attaches great importance to the study conditions of its programmes and has been regularly evaluating its teaching sessions for years.

What else do I need? In addition to formal access and eligibility criteria we expect you to have interest in business topics and to enjoy scientific research, good quantitative and analytical skills, adequate computer skills, excellent English skills, self-organization ability and commitment. Practical work experience is an advantage but not a requirement.

Master's degree program in Business Administration, Study / Examination Regulations dated 15 August 2016 (Official Bulletin 46/2016)

This site does not claim to be exhaustive. For each student, it is necessary to thoroughly read the relevant study and examination regulations (see also the pictorial representations of degree structure posted on the above-mentioned page).


Components of the program:

Compulsory Area (20 credits):

Master thesis (20 credits). The master thesis represents the completion of your studies and represents an independent scientific achievement. In this thesis, which is created in a period of 90 days and with a volume of approx. 100,000 - 120,000 characters without spaces (approx. 60 text pages without attachment) apply your acquired scientific method competence independently to deal with a current research problem. During your master thesis you will be looked after regularly. If necessary, the results will be presented in a seminar. The application documents for the master thesis are available at the examination office. Admission to the Master's thesis takes place if the prerequisites defined by the examiner are met.

Procedure: You can obtain the application documents from the examination office. On the registration form the date of the issue and the topic to be worked on will be noted and the form is to be signed by the examiner. This application must then be submitted immediately to the examination office.


Disciplinary Compulsory Elective Area (90 credits):

Only 70 credits of the modules completed are included in the calculation of the total score.


Disciplinary Compulsory Elective Area A, General Management (18 credits): In this area we offer courses from central and current areas of business administration. Through the selection of courses in this area, students are able to complement their respective previous education and thus ensure that they have broad knowledge in all relevant areas of business administration. At least 18 credits are required from the following compulsory elective modules:

  • Marketing Management (6 credits)
  • Financial Accounting and Analysis (6 credits)
  • Principles of taxation (6 credits)
  • Finance Theory (6 credits)
  • Organization and Management (6 credits)
  • Business Analytics and Data Science (6 credits)
  • Economics and Entrepreneurship (6 credits, only available from 2019 onwards)
  • Operations Research (6 credits)


Disciplinary Compulsory Elective Area B, Economics and Methodological Principles (18 credits): This area provides the students with the necessary "tools" for scientific work. The students are enabled to understand the current knowledge of modern business management. In addition, they are enabled to contribute to the scientific development of this discipline independently within the framework of the subsequent master thesis and subsequent professional activity. Students are given the opportunity to acquire specialist knowledge from econometrics, statistics and economics. Once again, the choice allows the students to build on their own individual knowledge. At least 18 credits are required from the following compulsory elective modules:

  • Applied Econometrics (6 credits)
  • Econometric Methods (12 credits)
  • Multivariate Statistical Analysis (6 credits)
  • Introduction to Advanced Microeconomic Analysis or Advanced Microeconomic Theory I (PhD-Level) (6 credits)
  • Introduction to Advanced Macroeconomic Analysis or Advanced Macroeconomic Analysis I (PhD-Level) (6 credits)
  • Game Theory (6 credits)
  • Competition Policy (6 credits)


Disciplinary Compulsory Elective Area C, Business Administration (30 credits): In the fields of business administration, current and research-oriented specialist knowledge is taught. The students primarily work in small groups on current issues of business administration. A minimum of 30 credits is required from the following areas:

  • Accounting
  • Financial Economics
  • Finance
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Marketing
  • Management

If more than 18 credits are completed in area A, area C is reduced correspondingly.


Disciplinary Compulsory Elective Area D, Wirtschaftswissenschaft (24 credits): In addition, 24 credits are to be chosen from the modules offered by the School of Economics and Business Administration (Economics, Business Administration, Methodological Principles). This area is very well suited for the recognition of modules with economic science content (eg from a semester abroad).

Note: If more than 66 credits are completed in areas A to C, area D is reduced accordingly.


Within the Master's Program, it is compulsory to visit at least two seminars, of which at least one seminar has to be completed at the School of Economics and Business Administration of the HU (the second seminar can also be completed and recognized during a semester abroad).


Interdisciplinary Compulsory Elective Area (ÜWP, 10 credits - ungraded):

Interdisciplinary Compulsory Elective Area has a volume of 10 credits. If grades are obtained, they are not taken into account in the calculation of the overall score. The following are eligible for this area:

  • Generic electives modules of other faculties of the HU
  • Language courses of the language centre (except language courses in the respective mother tongue or official language of the home country as well as German courses for foreigners and English courses under the level C2 GER)
  • Courses of the Career Centre (excluding introductory courses in economics and law)
  • Interdisciplinary and professional courses from other universities
  • Interdisciplinary and professional courses from abroad
  • Internship (10 credits)
  • Portfolio Management Programm (PMP) https://www.esmt.org/degree-programs/masters-management/curriculum/portfolio-management-program


Requirements for recognition of internships

The internship needs to be in relation to the field of study and has to have a duration of at least 6 weeks (full-time). “Full-time” may vary in the companies, in some companies “full-time” may mean 38 hours or 39 hours per week. An internship of at least 12 weeks with half of the regular full-time working time is also recognized.

For recognition of the internship you need to hand in:

  • A reference (issued by the company) which states the duration of the internship, the weekly workload and the tasks that have been worked on
  • A report (issued by the student) of about two A4 pages. The report needs to be a critic evaluation of the competencies acquired during the studies in respect to the working experience.

A recognition is only possible if the internship has been done during the Master’s.

Student assistant jobs in universities or in research institutes cannot be recognized as internships.

The recognition of the internships is handled in the examination office of the School of Business and Economics.
