We investigate application scenarios and technological
requirements for RFID based data acquisition in the producing sector.
Standard manufacturing systems implement a three layer architecture
based on the enterprise resource planning (ERP) layer (for order
planning), the manufacturing execution system (MES) layer (for factory
control), and the shop floor layer (for monitoring, machine control and
production data acquisition), fig. 1. Requirements on flexibility and
adaptability are a strong driver for more open architectures, based on
a much closer integration of ERP and MES systems with the shop floor
layer. A tighter integration of production data acquisition (PDA) into
the ERP enables to support fast reaction to critical situations and
production planning with increased flexibility. In cooperation with SAP
Research we have investigated open issues in acquisition and
integration of production data. For a closer integration of ERP, MES and shop floor software, it is
crucial to analyse production data acquisition technologies.
Manufacturing enterprises continuously collect, store, and analyze
production data such as data about the quality of the products, process
data, or material consumption data. The PDA must especially be analysed
in conjunction with
These points directly impact which technologies for processing, storing and exchanging shop floor data are applied. With regards to the architecture, centralized data management in a master database vs. decentralized data management must be evaluated along with the impact on related business models. Further we have cooperated with the MES software vendor MPDV Mikrolab GmbH. With their support, we conducted six case studies at production plants from different industries. Based on these results we analyze state-of-the-art as well as upcoming technologies (like RFID) and applications in production data acquisition with regards to a closer integration of shop-floor data into ERP Systems.
